As part of our collaborative in-house software team, Jonathan discusses the important projects he’s been involved in and exciting plans ahead.

Working in house

I graduated from Plymouth University in 2017 with a first in Computer Science and joined Bistech straight after, so I’ve been here for two years now. Working in an in-house Software team involves developing internal tools to enable the rest of the business to do their jobs more efficiently. For example, I recently worked on a piece of software which helps to detect faults in systems, so that our Service Desk team can resolve issues for our customers more quickly.

It’s a very hands-on role. We work on projects from start to finish, ie, establishing requirements from stakeholders all the way through to release. Seeing the positive effects that our programs have on the business gives us a real sense of achievement.

Learning and development

When I joined Bistech fresh out of uni, I was worried that I wouldn’t know anything at first. However, the hands-on experience I’ve had has been incredible. It’s helped me grow so much. If you’re looking for a company that would support your professional growth and development, Bistech is the best place to be.

“I’m not limited in my role as there are always opportunities to continue learning — there’s a lot of scope for progression.”

Future projects

One of the big pushes the Software team has made recently is migration to the cloud and utilising all the features of Microsoft Azure and other cloud technologies. Learning these new leading-edge technologies and understanding how we can use them to help the business is really exciting.

Why I’d recommend a Software role at Bistech

Everyone at Bistech is friendly, focused and switched on, but there aren’t any egos. I feel confident to talk to anyone openly and honestly, and new ideas are always welcome. You don’t have to know everything about each different technology — if you have the basics and you’re smart, then you can use your existing skills and learn new languages easily. Working in house means that we frequently interact with the wider business as well. Being able to improve on your soft skills, such as communication, is just as important as knowing the tech.
