Microsoft has announced further changes to the Microsoft 365 experience. The launch of Microsoft 365 E7, known as The Frontier Suite, is designed to help organisations stay in control as AI rapidly evolves. This new plan brings more visibility, intelligence and protection into the platform so businesses can continue to adopt AI confidently and safely.
AI has now moved far beyond writing support. It can complete complex tasks, access information and act like a digital worker running in the background. While this creates huge opportunities, it also introduces new risks. Organisations now need a clear way to see which agents exist, what they can access and how they behave.
AI is sitting inside core business processes and operations which means agents are touching line of business systems, moving data between tools, and triggering actions in some situations without a human in the loop. The risks are no longer theoretical, they are operational. Organisations need visibility of all agents in use, the permissions they hold and the controls that apply. They also need a simple and consistent way to scale the useful parts of AI without creating shadow AI.
Microsoft’s answer to this focuses on two gaps we see every day.
Visibility
Most organisations lose track of all the agents in use, what identities they hold or the permissions they have.
Governance at scale
Policies for people do not automatically apply to agents, which leaves holes in identity, data protection and incident response.
Microsoft 365 E7 is designed to close those gaps so AI can move across from pilots to reliable, safer options. In practice, this includes:
• giving agents proper identities so access can be approved, reviewed and removed
• allowing security and compliance teams to see agent activity alongside user activity
• ensuring data protection rules follow the data, even when agents handle it
• enabling IT to apply repeatable policies as new agents appear
• providing leadership with clearer signals on both risk and value
Microsoft 365 E7 includes everything from E5 and adds three major capabilities designed specifically for a workplace where AI is now part of daily operations. These additions are what positions E7 as The Frontier Suite.
Microsoft 365 Copilot
Copilot is Microsoft’s AI assistant built directly into the everyday tools people already use such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. In E7, Copilot is now included as standard to allow:
• employees to create, draft, analyse and summarise work faster
• teams to reduce time spent preparing documents, meetings and reports
• AI to become part of daily work instead of an optional extra
Entra Suite
The Entra Suite extends identity and access protection across people, apps and AI agents. It helps control who or what can access data while ensuring access stays aligned with company policies. This unlocks:
• stronger control over digital identities
• better protection against unauthorised access
• governance over access for both human users and AI agents
• a consistent security baseline across the organisation
Agent 365
This is Microsoft’s new tool for managing AI agents across the business. It gives IT and security teams visibility of every agent, what it can access and how it behaves. In detail, it provides:
• a single place to see all AI agents in use
• the ability to review and manage agent permissions
• alerts and insights when agents behave in an unusual way
• governance and compliance features that treat agents like first‑class identities
E3 and E5 have been the core Microsoft 365 enterprise plans for many years. E3 focused on productivity and essential security. E5 extended this with advanced security, compliance and analytics. E7 adds a new layer on top of both. It brings AI productivity, AI governance and identity control into one package. This makes E7 the plan designed for organisations that want to adopt AI at scale while staying secure and compliant.
Microsoft 365 E7 brings productivity, security, identity and agent governance together in one place. This gives businesses a strong foundation to use AI more widely without increasing complexity for IT or security teams.
E7 helps organisations move from small scale AI experiments to confident adoption.
